RI Shoreline Change Special Area Management Plan

This state-wide effort, developed by the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC), in coordination with URI and the Coastal Resources Center, provides coastal communities with science, tools and technical assistance so they can make confident policy decisions that reflect long-term commitment to resiliency and adaptation practice – a key approach for ensuring Rhode Island is able to deftly accommodate flooding and erosion, chief impacts of sea level rise and strong storms tied to climate change. This multi-year initiative included widespread participation among the public, private, academic, and community sectors.

One of the key results was STORMTOOLS, a method to illustrate and display storm inundation, with and without sea level rise, for different types of storms that could occur along Rhode Island’s coastline. At the simplest level the system can be used to access flooding estimates for the study are and the problem of interest for coastal planners and current and potential homeowners. At a more sophisticated level, the system can be used by professionals to perform studies in support coastal planning and engineering design.

State of Rhode Island Climate Change website

This website serves as the State of Rhode Island’s primary portal for information and resources on climate change and resiliency. It houses resources for a variety of audiences including RI citizens, State agencies, municipalities, non-profit organizations, and the business community. It addresses how Rhode Islanders are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as how to adapt to the projected effects of climate change such as coastal hazards like sea level rise and storm surge, as well as high heat, drought, and inland flooding.

“Climate resilience is defined as the capacity of individuals, institutions, businesses, and natural systems within Rhode Island to survive, adapt, and grow no matter what chronic stresses and weather events they experience.” – Resilient Rhody

Resilient Rhody, An Actionable Vision for Addressing the Impacts of Climate Change in Rhode Island, provides a roadmap for the state and engages a broad range of state, municipal, non-profit, and business interests for building resilience throughout the Ocean State.
